Authentic Chinese medicine theory
What is the difference between herbal medicine and traditional Chinese medicine?
Kampo medicine is a medical science that was developed mainly in Japan. Traditional Chinese medicine originates from China. Kampo medicine is an empirical medicine, while traditional Chinese medicine is more theoretically sound. I also used to be centered on the idea of Kampo medicine, but it never really felt right. However, I studied traditional Chinese medicine and began to see the human body. Traditional Chinese medicine considers humans to be part of the natural world, and is a science that considers what causes illness and how best to treat it when following the laws of nature, such as the seasons and yin and yang. (Dialectical theory)
Traditional Chinese medicine is made by combining plants, animals and minerals.
The characteristic of Chinese herbal medicine is that it examines the whole body and diagnoses based on the concept of "Sho." "Sho" mainly refers to one's constitution. Different Chinese herbal medicines are prescribed depending on one's constitution. For example, even when it comes to cold medicine, different Chinese herbal medicines are prescribed for people with good physical strength and those who do not. This is quite different from the idea of prescribing an antipyretic if you have a fever, regardless of your constitution, as in Western medicine, and is a custom-made prescription tailored to each individual.
The mechanism of action of Chinese herbal medicine and traditional Chinese medicine has gradually been proven.
In recent years, research into the mechanisms of action of herbal medicines has been progressing. For example, the effects of Yokukansan on the serotonin nervous system, Kakkonto on cytokines, Rikkunshito on the secretion of the appetite-stimulating hormone ghrelin, and Daikenchuto on increasing intestinal blood flow and stimulating gastrointestinal motility.
Traditional Chinese medicine has been used empirically throughout history, but research into it at the molecular level is currently underway.
Balances the body
In Chinese medicine, we adjust the balance of Qi, heat, blood, and fluids. The basic idea is to supplement what is lacking and remove what is excess. Adjusting this balance leads to fundamental treatment, improves the constitution, and prevents illness.
3000 years of history
The history of herbal medicine Herbal medicine is made by combining herbal medicines. It originates from traditional Chinese medicine, which has a very long history. It was written about in the oldest medical book in China, the Huangdi Neijing, about 3,000 years ago.
Traditional Chinese medicine was introduced to Japan around 600 AD, developed uniquely in Japan, and later came to be known as Kampo medicine.
On the other hand, Western medicine was developed from petroleum and has a history of about 200 years.
Until then, traditional medicine and natural remedies were the main methods of treatment, but due to vested interests, Western medicine has now become the main form of medical treatment.
Natural remedies are good for your body
Kampo medicine is a kind of "composite medicine" made by combining multiple natural herbal medicines, so the prescription contains many ingredients. Therefore, one prescription can treat various symptoms. In addition, by combining multiple ingredients, the efficacy of the medicine can be enhanced and side effects can be alleviated.
On the other hand, Western medicine is a medicine developed from petroleum. It is made by extracting a single ingredient and chemically synthesizing it, so one medicine is effective for only one symptom. While you can expect strong medicinal effects in some areas, there are also cases where the pharmacological effects are too strong.
In addition, Oriental medicine has a concept called "Mibyo," which refers to unpleasant symptoms that occur before you get sick. Even if tests show no abnormalities, treatment can be given for symptoms that are noticeable but the cause is unknown, such as "prolonged fatigue" or "lack of motivation."
Try it for 3 months
Chinese herbal medicines can be broadly divided into primary treatments and symptomatic treatments.
Main treatments are for improving your constitution, while symptomatic treatments are for improving the unpleasant symptoms you experience at the time.
With regular medication, the effects will appear within 1 to 3 months, while with special medication, the effects will appear in as little as 20 minutes.
A characteristic of my prescriptions is that I always prescribe two medications: a main treatment and a symptomatic treatment.
Even if symptomatic treatment improves symptoms temporarily, if the patient's underlying constitution is not improved, another illness will appear.
We will always prescribe the original medicine used for fundamental treatment.
We start with a one-month prescription. After one month, we observe the effects, and if it does not match the patient's condition, we change the herbal medicine.
